Candy, Andy & the Bearandas

Trust badges

Living in a picture-perfect English village, two panda bears, Mr and Mrs Bearanda, bring up their plastic children, Candy and Andy.

Devised by Century 21 Productionsfor the 1960s comic book market, the images created for the photo-strips are a surreal, unique look at domesticity, the family and childhood. Their unusual nature meant they never reached the popularity of other Anderson characters, and the photo story comics were abandoned after a year.

This book presents the best of the surviving original transparencies from this brilliantly bizarre project: driving their striped mini, preparing for Bonfire Night, or going for a boat ride, Candy, Andy and the Bearandas live in an unforgettable, dreamlike world.

Introduction: Alan Dein (oral historian and radio broadcaster)
Foreword: Jamie Anderson
Designer: John Morgan
Type: Faux-leather hardback, with foil blocking & tipped-in image.Size: 23 × 16 cm, 92pp

    Oh dear…

This was bought for as a present, and based on the blurb on the site I thought this would be a more interesting book. Sadly, as Andrew R states, almost half the book is blank pages (placed haphazardly) and seemingly to up an already meagre offering. There is mention of an interview with photographer Doug Luke, even though most of the photos are by Roger Perry. Why not publish the actual interview? ‘Each picture has stories to tell.’ Joanne B says in her review - but the photos DID tell their own story in the comics, annuals and storybooks so why no real information on those? A missed opportunity to be something more definitive about a largely forgotten slice of Anderson comic history.

    ONLY HALF A BOOK

92 pages .... 40 of them are totally BLANK. 44 blank pages if you include the end papers. 39 full page colour photos and 10 pages of text. Absolute rip-off unless mine is a misprint.
